All kids come up with their own language and words for things and I often ask Dellaina when she’s being silly or trying to act like she’s saying something in Spanish, “what language are you speaking? Dellainaese?” It’s cute to hear interpretations of things as well.
I forget about common sayings in the English language being a difficult concept for someone so literal. She asked me about the phrases “made his mouth water” and “sunk his teeth into” from a story. She has been using the latter one herself the past couple of days. She’s very good at applying things she learns. The other day, she responded, after a particularly crazy Wyatt display, “there’s one in every family” HAHA! It’s a quote from The Lion King, but the fact that she knew how to use it properly to describe Wild Wyatt cracked me up! Just like I was singing Sweet Dellaina Lee to her one night not too long ago and when I got to the “Mama and Daddy know that the next one will be wellllllllllllllllll, Wyatt Gregory” she remarks, “I think the ‘well’ is the ‘Uh-oh’” precisely, my dear!
She has learned to count visually, not always touching or pointing to the objects we are counting. It’s quite impressive. She can do it pretty quickly for up to 6 things (especially if they are laid out neatly).
One time after getting scared, Dellaina commented that it, “made my heart bounce” or after spinning around, “my head is jiggling”
She constantly asks, “could somebody. . .” even though there is only one person nearby she is expecting to fulfill the request.
She uses “science” as a verb and I love it. “I know you are trying to science, but could you help me. . .” or “just like you science!” I think she got it mixed up with study.
She was asking me, “what is sasha mean?” and “sasha time” I had to ask her to tell me more about where she heard it and she explained that Ms. Ruby says, “it’s not ‘sasha time’ we’re not supposed to be talking to our friends, we’re supposed to be listening” So, I realize she meant “social time”
Every time we mention American Idol, she starts singing American Woman now, which is just amusing. She wanted me to tell her more of the words. Some of her favorite songs are Elvis’ “Hound Dog” which she likes to play for Hank and “Free Falling” which Uncle Doug can play on the guitar.
One day as we were heading upstairs, Wyatt takes off running and Dellaina yells after him, “Wyatt, how about we pick up this toy you threw down before we go upstairs for bath?” I mean, straight out of the mouth of her Daddy! (who did laugh and give her a big high-five and hug)
Dellaina has gotten a lot of much needed new clothes from Granny, Mammie and Aunt Emily and she has been SO EXCITED to pick out something new to wear each morning. Sometimes at night, she’ll comment on how she wishes it was the next day so she could pick out something new again.
When they swing something between them like it’s a (jump) rope, they say, “hair rope, hair rope” and I don’t know why.
They both love to make up songs. Dellaina is good with making them rhyme (even with made up words)

Wyatt has quite his own unique vocabulary and understanding of the world as well:
“mint truck” – cement truck (many of them are, in fact, a minty green)
“banas” – bananas
“nilk” – milk
“browses” – eyebrows
and his latest phrase, that I am just SOOO proud his Daddy taught him: “pecker” and yes, it refers to what you think. *sigh. (and Ms. Audrey commented on it, too! just as I feared)
He went through a phase of talking about and pretending things he had were cigarettes! (Thanks Uncle Garris and Grandaddy) Even though, his pretending wasn’t really like putting something to his mouth – he didn’t really know what it was, just that it was a new word and possibly something to covet.
He says, “oh” a lot in the cutest little “oh, I didn’t realize, now I understand” kind of way.
“actually, I do” (or don’t as the case may be). He’ll deny wanting something and then respond, “actually, I do”
“cuz, I just like to” when asked about doing something he shouldn’t be doing. *sigh. *grrr.
“I want you to go for your run/go to the kitchen” whenever I am trying to reprimand or keep him from doing something he shouldn’t be doing – he wants me to just leave or go back to what I was doing!
when he eats, he’ll ask us, “which one I should eat first?” and whichever one Dellaina or I pick out, he chooses something different, but whichever one his DADDY suggests, he’ll eat next.
As Pen noted, he has turned more blonde, thanks to lots of sun exposure. I get that boy outside to run off some energy as much as possible! I don’t take as many solo pictures of him and every time I start to feel badly about that I remember that he just doesn’t stay still long enough, so it’s not that I don’t try.
At Addison’s party (see how old my notes are?!) Wyatt was covered in icing and Greg commented that we’d need to “get the water hose to wash you off” and Wyatt was just startled, but really liked the idea and continued to make the comment for days afterwards.
He likes to stack things vertically. I’ve come into the kitchen after bringing bags of groceries in to find the cans stacked up on top of each other in the middle of the floor or opened the pantry to find them the same way on the shelves. Or toys that you wouldn’t think could stack on top of each other, he’ll attempt. The fall is probably part of the appeal.
